Disaster Point: An Ominous Caving Experience

I remember it like it was yesterday. We were in the Rocky Mountains near Jasper Canada – myself, and two climbing mates: Kelly and Luc. We hiked. We climbed. And we caved.

The year prior, I had my first caving experience in the same place. We aimed high with Disaster Point: a very technical cave involving multiple rappels (abseils) into a…

Back in Bangkok

You can come to Bangkok a hundred or more times and your senses with still be hit by the sights and smells, good and bad. Bangkok is a melting pot of everything Asian you can think of from the monks walking the streets in their saffron robes to street vendors selling delicious food along the side of the road.

The humid…

Mountaineering 101: Don’t Look Down

When you are traversing a spiny ridge over 10,000 feet in the air, with an incredibly steep rocky scree slope on one side and cliffs overlooking thin air on the other side, and the wind is blowing fiercely, there is but one golden rule to live by: Don’t Look Down! At least, that became the mantra on our recent ascent…

One of the coolest camping grounds – Ngorogoro Crater, Tanzania

Yes, this elephant is not fenced in at all.  This photo was taken at the camping ground on the edge of the Ngorogoro Crater in Tanzania.  Animals freely walk in and out of the crater and often through the campground, which is unfenced.  This large elephant walked straight past numerous tents to find some nice lush grass to munch on…

Everthenomad’s dream destinations

I was at a farewell party yesterday for a friend moving back to Switzerland, in a stunning Soho apartment where one wall was adorned with Burmese drawings kept behind glass. This sparked a conversation about places I’ve been to and places I dream of visiting.

No surprise, I woke up with wanderlust this morning and started running through the list of…

Copenhagen Baby

I have arrived in Copenhagen, the first stop of my fleeting journey over Scandinavia en route to Moscow.

I had booked myself into Danhostel for two nights. Unfortunately it turned out to be affiliated with Hostelling International. Nothing is free at His. The beds are cheap but you pay a lot for extras such as using the internet or eating their…

Magic of Cabo Polonio

In the winter of 2007, I spent three months living in Buenos Aires. However much I love that city, one of the fondest memories of my South American sojourn was a trip to Cabo Polonio, a magical village on the eastern coast of Uruguay.

I first heard about Cabo from a friend who grew up in Uruguay. As he talked lovingly…

Flashpacking has never been so easy

You’re flashpacking in the wild, on your crazy trip to Hong Kong, and bringing the usual amazing amount of technology among – your camera, your Macbook, iPod and lots of more gimmicks. Yes, we know you love it at least as much as we do, but a big, amazing, and unexplicable problem comes up in 2009: you don’t have the…
